  • WePad Android Tablet Crushes iPad In Spec Battle The day the iPad was launched it got two main complaints: (1) The name was atrocious and (2) It was underpowered and lacking some simple niceities. Say what you want about the WePad name – in terms of taking the closed Apple approach and bringing it to the masses with Android’s open community nature – I think “We” works very well. But more importantly, the specs rock.

With an 11.6-inch screen, 1.66GHz processor, front-facing camera, 2 USB ports, SIM slot, MicroSD slot, Flash, Adobe AIR, and ability to use all open eBook standards, the WePad bests the iPad in all of those categories. You can see the full comparison at TechCrunch.com.

But the sugar gets sweeter. In addition to all the above, you’ll be running Android and will have access to Android Market in addition to the WePad marketplace which is said to include distribution of newspapers and magazines that are optimized for the device. Produced by a German company called Neofonie and it should be available in April in Germany.

I think its safe to say the Neofonie WePad could be a HUGE hit… and if it is… there are a ridiculous number of Android lovers and unimpressed Apple-loving-iPad-haters that might jump aboard if its made available globally.

I want to acknowledge something – better specs are great, but if they can’t be offered at an affordable price, none of this will matter.

  • Kyocera Zio Coming By July

When the Kyocera Zio M6000 launches sometime in the 2nd Quarter (that’s before July for those keeping score at home) it will become the company’s first Android Phone. And judging by the initial looks of the device, it’s a pretty good first effort:

The Kyocera Zio packs a 3.5-inch WVGA touchscreen, trackball, 3.2MP camera with 30fps video record/playback, 256MB internal memory, 32GB MicroSD slot, ambient light sensor, accelerometer, and all the goodness you get with Android. As a CDMA device, the Zio could reach Sprint or Verizon in the United States among other American smaller carriers (MetroPCS, Cricket) or international territory.

Pricing and exact availability details will be limited to your imagination until future notice, but if you noticed, we’ll keep you updated.

  • Windows Phone 7 Series Doesn't Support Multitasking

Before this, Apple’s iPhone was the main target of users and reviewers who were complaining that it did not support full multitasking, meaning you couldn’t run third-party apps in the background. Sure, you could listen to the music from the iPod app while composing an email, but you couldn’t listen to music from the Pandora app while composing an email. Now it seems that Microsoft has decided that it might actually be the way to go, as the newly announced Windows Phone 7 Series will not support multitasking as well. The reason given is the same as the one offered by Apple – it drains batteries. It does sound like a valid reason, especially since many Android and webOS users have complained about battery life before.

Fortunately Microsoft does have a workaround in place, as Windows Phone 7 series will support push notifications, allowing third-party apps to send updates and status messages to a phone’s home screen, even when the app isn’t running in the background, just like how the iPhone does it.

Do you think that Apple got it right, by not allowing background apps, or do you think that webOS and Android are on to something with full multitasking?

  • Cool GTW18 cellphone packs a projector

Cellphones with projectors are nothing new, but next again previously released models did not boast a performance as poor as the Cool GTW18 that you see here today. While it comes with a 3.2" touchscreen display at 240 x 400 resolution, the LED mini projector maxes out at 640 x 480 resolution, which is a far cry from the "HD 1080P" label on the device. Talk about clearly misleading whoever picks that up! Ah well, you would best leave a phone to be a phone, while a projector ought to remain at that as well. Other
features that are typical of a China-originated handset would be dual SIM slots as well as a pair of microSD memory card slots (!). Battery life gets exhausted after half an hour of video playback using its projector, which ain't so cool after all.

  • Witspad W8 Mobile Internet Device

The Witspad W8 Mobile Internet Device (MID) does look like a smartphone at first glance, something which hails from the HTC family of devices, but we guess we are wrong because it lacks SMS support, which disqualifies it from being a full handset replacement. Hardware specifications include the Maemo OS, a 806MHz Marvell PXA 320 processor, a 4.3″ touchscreen display, 128MB RAM, 256MB ROM, a 3.2-megapixel camera, a 3.5mm headphone jack, GPS support, Wi-Fi connectivity and CDMA2000 3G connectivity. It is currently going for around $470 after conversion in China.

  • PayPal Now Allows iPhone Users To Bump To Make Payments

You might have fiddled with the Bump app on the iPhone before, which allows you to exchange information with other iPhones by just bumping both of them together. Now it seems that the feature has made it to PayPal’s latest update for its iPhone app. Instead of having to poke around the screen and key in a bunch of personal information, you can just bump your iPhones together to transfer money to (or receive money from) the other party. It sure seems like an easier way to handle stuff, rather than having to key in user IDs or whatever. Do you think that it’s more useful now, or is it just another marketing gimmick? Check out a hilarious video of it in action after the jump.

  • Nokia E73 Coming To T-Mobile In June? To be honest, there is little hope the release of this news will garner the same excitement now as it would have back in 2008. It has been hoped that Nokia would make a resurgence in the US market and grace us with their phones that are still sleek, modern and generally pretty damn durable. It’s been whispered to us that the Nokia E73 will make a T-Mobile appearance sometime in June. The force is strong with this whisper so we’re willing to take the gamble and put this one in the rumor but likely category. Details regarding the specs on the E73 remain a totally mystery, though I’m sure we can expect it to run some form of Symbian.

While it’s nice to see Nokia get back in the T-Mobile game, is it too late? Have Android, Blackberry and the coming resurgence of Windows Phone 7 all but eliminated the chances of a Nokia resurrecting itself? What say you?

  • Cliq XT Coming In At $99, The Price Is Right

Well after a little bit of website trouble we’re back and ready to report some good news. For you Cliq XT fans waiting a few more days of waiting will cost you less than previously thought. The first of the month showed us a leaked price sheet that put the Cliq XT at $129.99, and as it turns out the actual price on a 2-year contract will be $99.99. No word on pricing for Even More Plus customers as we last heard it was $329.99 so we’ll be sticking with that until we hear differently. Judging by the feature set and with the probability of a future Android OS update, $99.99 is a steal for the Cliq XT. In our eyes, $99.99 is a sweet spot and should bring some nice sales numbers. Of course, you can always get two.

  • Apple iPad -- model A1337 -- phreaks the FCC

A pair of iPads was just revealed in the FCC's system in perfect synchrony with that little pre-order sitch with which you may or may not already be familiar. Apple, of course, has a track record of timing its FCC filings perfectly so that virtually nothing is revealed before Cupertino wants it to be, and frankly, you're not going to get much here that you didn't already know -- the photographs (both external and internal) and the user manual are all still under confidentiality. Both units were tested for WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n and Bluetooth, while one -- model number A1337 -- adds in GSM 850 / 1900 and UMTS 850 / 1900, so it appears that Apple has bundled all of its 3G and non-3G models into just two filings regardless of storage capacity. We caught A1337 flipping through an old issue of 2600, so for all we know, it socially engineered its way to FCC approval -- whatever it takes to make that late-April launch window, right?

  • iPad mute switch magicked into a 'screen rotation lock' overnight, a flurry of other tidbits emerge

Apple's pushing out a few more scraps of info about the iPad in conjunction with the launch of pre-orders. One of the quirkier details is that what was previously known as the mute switch on the iPad -- similar to the one on the iPhone -- is now known as the "screen rotation lock" on Apple's website. We suppose it makes more sense for this sort of device, both due to the "hold it any way you feel like" marketing push, and since it's less likely to start ringing in the middle of a Remember Me screening than your iPhone is. In other news, it's been confirmed that iBooks will be able to sync free (non-DRM'd) ePub titles in from iTunes, which is good news for people who want to use an existing ePub stash of theirs with Apple's fancy page-flipping interface. Also on the books front, it was clarified today that the iPad can indeed use VoiceOver screen-reading for reading pages of books out loud -- we knew the screen reading tech was on the iPad, but now it sounds as if it will be more directly integrated into iBooks. Apple also clarified today that folks who sign up for the 250MB iPad data plan will receive pop-up alerts when they're running short on data, similar to battery warnings, at the 20 percent, 10 percent and zero marks. There's an account management pane that lets you sign up for or cancel service, add another 250MB, or swap to an unlimited plan. But wait, there's more! Apple's also confirming a few more iPhone OS 3.2 features, like the addition of Google's "Terrain" view in maps and a slightly revamped iPod app UI. 3.2 also brings some nice video tweaks like support for additional formats (AVI and MJPEG) and native uploads to Facebook -- further boosting the iPad's external camera friendliness.

  • Broadband plan aims to boost speed, wireless

U.S. regulators released a blueprint for upgrading Internet access for all Americans, with Internet speeds up to 25 times the current average, expanded coverage and more airwaves for mobile services.
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission plan released on Monday comes as the Internet increasingly delivers everything from telephone service to movies, music and banking services.
Nearly 200 million Americans had fast Internet access at home last year, but about 100 million do not, says the FCC document. "Like electricity a century ago, broadband is a foundation for economic growth, job creation, global competitiveness and a better way of life."

Requested by Congress, the plan of over 350 pages looks set to touch off intense lobbying by communications companies over legislation and FCC rules that will underpin the goals.
A shift in airwaves from broadcasters like CBS Corp could benefit wireless providers like AT&T and Verizon Wireless.
While upgrading the nation's wireless and wireline networks would be a boost for companies like equipment maker Alcatel Lucent SA, wireless chip maker Qualcomm and fiber optic providers like Corning Inc.
Several elements of the plan had emerged in the past few weeks but the five members of the FCC are due to vote Tuesday on issuing a summary of "Connecting America: The National Broadband Plan."
A House Energy and Commerce Committee panel will hold a March 25 hearing on the FCC's proposals.
    EXPANDING COVERAGE
A Connect America Fund would receive up to $15.5 billion over the next decade, using money shifted from the Universal Service Fund that currently supports telephone service for the poor and rural areas.
The plan aims to have 100 million American households get Internet speeds of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) by 2020 -- a speed that would allow a consumer to download a two-hour, high-definition movie in less than 10 minutes.
As an interim goal, the plan calls for 100 million U.S. homes have 50 Mbps Internet speeds by 2015.
The current household average speed is about 4 Mbps. Even homes with cable or fiber Internet access only achieve speeds averaging 5 Mbps to 6 Mbps.
Cisco Systems Inc recently announced it would introduce a router that can handle Internet traffic up to 12 times faster than rival products. Google Inc has said it plans to build a super-fast Internet network to show that it can be done. The FCC has praised both announcements.
    SHIFTING AIRWAVES
The plan stresses the need to devote more airwaves to the anticipated explosion of handheld devices capable of playing movies and music in addition to handling emails and voice calls.
The agency says it is seeking expanded authority from Congress to hold auctions that would provide incentives for broadcasters to give up some of their airwaves for purchase by wireless companies.
The FCC said it would leave open the possibility of taking action if broadcasters do not voluntarily give up spectrum.
Analysts said meeting even the FCC's 50 Mbps interim goal would likely take a lot more investment by companies like AT&T and Qwest Communications International Inc.
"Five years from now it would be tough for them to get anything of any size done," said Stifel Nicolaus analyst Christopher King, "they would really need to start today."
Some analysts have also been skeptical about whether the airwaves reallocation would appeal to broadcasters unless the FCC offers them a big percentage of the auction proceeds.
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski told Reuters on Friday that "a number of broadcasters" were open to his "win-win" plan, which would have them give up airwave licenses for auction in exchange for receiving a share of the proceeds.
Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc and Britain's Vodafone Group Plc

  • Rajasthan Royals Vs Delhi Daredevils - Live in IPL 2010 Only one match is scheduled in the 4th day of IPL 2010. Rajasthan and Delhi will play their second match in IPL 2010 on that day. Delhi started with the win in the 1st match against the Kings XI Punjab and RR got a tight defeated against the Mumbai Indians. Delhi also had to struggle for chasing the target of 143 against the Punjab.

6th Match : Delhi Daredevils Vs Rajasthan Royals - Ahmedabad
    Starts 20:00 IST, 14:30 GMT

Yousuf Pathan is in great form which he showed against the Mumbai Indians scoring 1st century of IPL 3. It seemed Rajasthan were going to chase the target of 212. Dogra and Jhunjhunwala showed some batting form in the middle order too. The main problem was ther overseas players were totally out of form. Mascarenhas might loose his place for Martyn or Micheal Lumb and Shaun Tait should perform in this match.

Delhi had good bowling attack with Nannes and Maharoof doing well. Except the new captain Gambhir, top order was totally collapsed. Sehwag and Dilshan, the real T20 players, weren't able to show their full commitment. Delhi might go with same overseas players with armer in the bench.

Delhi will want to move in the top of the points table. The two times semi-finalist wins this match then they will share 4 points with KKR. Rjasthan want their first points in this season of IPL. IPL 2010 - Points table

Apple may have moved nearly 120,000 iPads in just its first day of pre-orders, an estimate by private analysts at the AAPL Sanity board suggests. After excluding the 16,500 average orders on a given day, the collective has used the intervals between order numbers over 19.5 hours to estimate that about 119,987 iPads should have sold during that period. The statistic doesn't include those who simply reserved a unit in-store and potentially puts the actual launch day tally considerably higher.

The statistics also provide some possible insight into preferences for particular models. Apple's emphasis on price has had relatively little effect as the 99 orders used as the sample were equally divided between 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models. The 3G version was noticeably less popular as only 31 percent of pre-orders chose that version, although its late April release date may hide actual demand as many could be holding off on 3G iPad purchases with over a month to wait.

At an average of 1.1 tablets bought per customer, few had a reason to test the two-per-order limit.

While Apple is unlikely to verify the data, the predictions if accurate could make the iPad the most successful e-book reader launch to date. Amazon has never publicly detailed the number of Kindles sold so far, but at least one analyst guess had Amazon selling just 500,000 Kindles throughout all of 2008, leaving the majority of its sales to 2009. Barnes & Noble has always claimed it's had strong sales for the Nook but has also declined to provide numbers and is believed to have been hit by supply shortages as much as by demand.

It may also make the Apple device the most successful larger tablet-sized device to date. System builders have been offering tablet PCs based on Windows since 2002, but the category has rarely expanded beyond business computers meant for doctors, warehouse workers and others that have specific needs.

  • Asus K52F-SX060D The Asus K52F is the first Core i3-powered laptop to come to our test labs and is by far a much better performer than mainstream laptops, which run on Core 2 Duo processors. It impresses us as to how this much processing power can be availed in a sub-40K price bracket. Let’s see what makes this laptop special and whether the price point can compel somebody to buy it.

    Processor
The Core i3 processor belongs to Intel’s new lineup of Core processors. Code named Arrandale, the Core i3 is the entry-level processor—Core i5 and Core i7 are the mainstream and high-end ones respectively. The Core i3 variants are intended to replace the old mainstream Pentium Dual Cores and the Core 2 Duos. Based on a 32nm manufacturing process, one of the most striking features of the Core i3 is the use of Hyper-Threading technology (HT).

On a single die, there are two independent cores running at the same frequency and, due to HT, each core runs two threads. So, two cores running two threads each, gives the throughput of four simultaneous threads at the same frequency. Therefore each core can work on two tasks at the same time, enabling the user to work in an intensive multi-tasking environment. So, it is the price-performance ratio that makes this processor, and hence this laptop, special.

  • Rogers gets LG Pop, Fido goes green with Sony Ericsson Naite

Let's circle back and take a look at a couple of big handset launches in the Great White North this month, shall we? Rogers nabbed the LG Pop -- sans solar back -- for a mere CAD $19.99 (about $19) on three-year contract or CAD $174.99 ($166) commitment-free, living up to the phone's philosophy of taking full-touch awesomeness downmarket with a 3 megapixel cam and 3-inch WQVGA display. Next up, Rogers' value brand Fido added the Naite from Sony Ericsson -- the first GreenHeart-branded handset to land anywhere in North America
-- for $25 on a two-year deal. The eco-focused candybar (which might tug on the heartstrings of ex-T610 owners) keeps it simple with a 2 megapixel camera, but still manages triband 3G and an integrated FM radio. Both are available now.

  • BlackBerry touch slider due for Sprint as 9930? RIM's first touchscreen slider is bound at least for Sprint but may have problems on its way if a leak today proves accurate. Now called the 9900 in GSM form and 9930 for CDMA networks, the phone is reportedly being tested with Sprint branding but has had an unusually high 80 percent failure rate in early testing. BGR has heard that the only other BlackBerry to suffer similar problems early on was the Pearl Flip.

The failure rate isn't necessarily indicative of final quality but could stall the actual release.

Regardless of how soon the Sprint version arrives, it's hinted the 9930 could be a Sprint exclusive within the US and that the 9900 may be reserved for carriers elsewhere. The latter is known to have 850MHz and 1,900MHz 3G, which could put it on all three major Canadian carriers as well as AT&T if the design isn't limited to a single American carrier.

The slider is potentially a major technology showcase for RIM, as it may drop the SurePress click-down screen from the Storm2 but would be the first to combine both touch and a trackpad. It may also bring 802.11n Wi-Fi and BlackBerry OS 6.0, neither of which have been seen before on a shipping RIM phone. It may release this year but is far from any definitive schedule.

The new version takes up less space and adds a USB port for charging a bonus gadget while still maintaining its central iPod charging/night-lighting capability.

  • Sony HX903 3DTV priced and dated in UK

Sony's 3D Ready TV, the Sony BRAVIA HX903, has gone on pre-order for those who want to make sure they get one when it comes out in June.

Although Sony has been cagey to requests as to a price and release date, that hasn't stopped luxury retailer, Harrods, putting one in their shop window with a price tag and delivery date.

The 52-inch model is expected to retail at £2500 and ship in June if not earlier says the shop, although you will need to pay extra for the 3D glasses and a 3D transmitter as the model is only billed as 3D Ready rather than 3D out of the box.

"We’re really excited to be able to offer our customers the opportunity to see 3D TV first hand as seeing the technology in action is out of this world. 3D is continuing to dominate the headlines and once more, our Sound & Vision department is at the forefront of cutting edge technology", says Sam Zaku, business manager for Sound & Vision at Harrods.

Meanwhile Curry's is also offering the TV as well:

"The Sony 3D TVs will go on general sale and 3D Blu-ray players will be out in time for the World Cup and with a starting price of £1999. The 52-inch will be £2499. To enjoy 3D content, viewers will also require 3D glasses available to purchase separately at £99.99 and a 3D transmitter available at £74.99 at Currys".

The news comes after a busy week for 3D TV that saw Samsung detail US pricing, LG announcing availability of their 3D TVs in the UK and Panasonic getting its offering into Best Buy.

  • Use DynDNS for better success with Back To My Mac

Many folks were excited when Apple announced Back to My Mac as part of MobileMe. Being able to remotely access your Mac from anywhere sounded like magic. We're used to products from Apple that "just work" but for most people most of the time, Back to My Mac "just doesn't."

To maximize your chances, you're supposed to use a supported router, but even that's no guarantee. At home I have an Airport Extreme Base Station (Wireless-N), and at the office I have an Airport Extreme Dual-Band model. I don't think it's possible to get a "more compliant" setup, yet I still can't get it to work most of the time.

Under the adage "nothing ventured, nothing gained," I took a chance and signed up for a free account with DynDNS. DynDNS gives you a free hostname which will go to your computer even when your IP address changes. There are scads of DynDNS domain names available, but for the purposes of this example, let's assume that your domain name is imac.homeip.net.

  • Vodafone UK getting HTC Desire

The HTC Desire is turning out to be the mobile equivalent of the village bike - every operator's getting a ride. The latest to announce UK availability for the handset is Vodafone. The network had previously only said it'd be coming to Europe. Interestingly, that means that it'll be available alongside the Nexus One.

As previously reported, the HTC Desire offers a whopping 3.7-inch AMOLED display, Android 2.1, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and HTC's much-liked Sense UI. On top of that, Vodafone will pre-load its "360" services, including Music and MyWeb. It'll have full access to the Android Marketplace, too. It'll land in April.

The operator also confirmed that it'll be exclusively selling the HTC Legend at launch. That handset, which analysts have described as a replacement to the HTC Hero, has a smaller 3.2-inch AMOLED display, a 5-megapixel camera, and optical trackpad in place of the old trackball on the Hero. That'll be showing up in April, too.

The only network yet to confirm whether or not it'll be offering the HTC Desire is O2.

Maemo 5 didn't stand on its own for long before being mashed together with Intel's Moblin, but Nokia's N900 still stands as one of the best handhelds for web browsing. It's hardly the world-beater that Nokia (may have) hoped it to be, but that's not because the internals aren't impressive. • Toshiba BDX2000 budget Blu-ray Disc player Toshiba is late to the Blu-ray party, having waited a decent interval after the death of HD-DVD. The BDX2000 - oh, how futuristic products used to seem, just by adding the millennium to their name - is its first offering. It’s a sleek unit, with a pull-down front panel that hides the disk tray, display, controls and an SD card slot.

Beneath the flap, there are power, pause, stop, play and eject buttons to the left, with the disc tray in the centre and the dot matrix display at the right. The display is visible when the flap’s closed, and the overall effect is quite pleasing.

The BDX2000 supports BD Live, linked through its Ethernet port. In fact, that’s all it supports – you can’t update the firmware over the internet, and have to download new firmware releases then burn them to disc instead.

The main menu is straightforward, and uncluttered, with a set of icons that are selected using the remote, which itself feels a little plasticky, and not quite weighty enough. Delving deeper into the menus, there are some odd quirks. Where most BD Live players have a simple setting to enable or disable the facility, on the BDX2000 it’s buried under custom network preferences, alongside such consumer-scaring options as IP addresses
