  • Boost gets back into CDMA game in a big way

In the 'press releases we missed while going out of our gourds on the show floor at CES' department, Sprint's Boost Mobile is getting back into CDMA in a big way this month. It wasn't long ago that Boost swore off its CDMA tendencies as iDEN started to heat up again against all odds -- thanks largely to the release of hot (well, hot by iDEN standards, anyway) devices like the Stature -- but CDMA makes a lot more sense now that the parent company has scooped up Virgin and smartly has no interest in running two separate, unrelated prepaid divisions. Anyhow, the gist of the announcement is that Boost will be reinvesting heavily in its $50 monthly unlimited plan for CDMA devices and has brought on three inaugural handsets to help kick it off: the Mirro and Incognito (Sprint version pictured) from Sanyo alongside the venerable BlackBerry Curve 8330. The Mirro features a slick, mirrored finish (hence the name, we suspect) along with a 1.3 megapixel cam; it clocks in at $99.99. The Incognito steps up to $149.99 with a hidden set of external controls, a 2 megapixel cam, a full QWERTY keyboard inside -- it's got social network integration, to boot, and users can add 3G data to their plan for another $10 a month. Same goes for the 8330, which retails for $249.99; all three prices seem high until you remember that Boost doesn't do contracts. All three handsets are available now.

  • Radar in your pocket? ESPOO, Finland – The mad scientists at Nokia Research Center are always brewing up something that let’s us peak behind the curtain of future mobile technologies. Some concoctions make it into our mobile phones, while others never make it outside the NRC building in Helsinki. “Mobile Radar” is definitely one I’d like to see in my handset sooner rather than later.

Unveiled today during “Demo House 2010” at Aalto University located just down the road from Nokia’s headquarters in Espoo, the “Mobile Radar” demo shows how you can measure an object’s distance, speed, and direction using a mobile device. It’s essentially the same technology the police use in their radars to give you a $239,000 speeding ticket. (it’s true, in Finland, speeding fines are based on your salary)

In the video shown below, you’ll see researcher Jani Ollikainen use his hand to adjust the music player’s volume, without ever touching the hardware. Even with an object in his way (like your pants pocket or even a wood door), the radar works without a hitch. In the second demo, you’ll see fellow researchers Terhi Rautiainen and Risto Kaunisto measure the distance, speed, and direction of a human walking.

The possibilities are endless with this technology. How about a home security system that alerts you if there’s movement in your house? Or how about some cool new gaming? Check out the video below and post how you’d like to see mobile radar used! But don’t get your hopes up that you’ll see this in a Nokia handset very soon, it’s still just a prototype.

  • HTC Smart - their first "dumb" phone

Mobile-review have posted an article about the new HTC Smart. Here are the final paragraphs from the article.
HTC have entered the feature phone market as a smartphone manufacturer, hence the codename "Smart" and its design that looks very similar to their real smartphones. And to be honest, it does look pretty. Spec-wise, the Smart is nothing out of the ordinary - 300 Mhz CPU, no 3D accelerator onboard, not much RAM. So there is no chance geeks will fall for it. However all menus are blazing fast, which is what really matters to the ordinary consumer. He'll also be happy to see a 2.8-inch resistive display with both a standard keypad and QWERTY keybpard (in the landscape mode). Interestingly enough, it'll sport only 240x320 resolution, which isn't much by today's standard, but will do just fine in its target price bracket. Plus there will be a 3 MP camera, a microSD memory card slot, a mobile Twitter widget and a 1100 mAh battery.

The HTC Smart is set to hit the shelves in May at the price point of 200 Euro, which will put it right up against Samsung's and LG's phones, even Nokia will have to take this bold newcomer into consideration too. Their first efforts in this field won't change the landscape of the feature phone market, but as far as HTC are concerned, they have made themselves secure against the decline of Windows Mobile - now they've got a great pillow to fall on, should anything happen. A right step in the right direction that jeopardizes Nokia's strategy even more, since now they'll have an even tougher time explaining why an S60-based smartphone is better than a feature phone to their mid-range audience.

  • Motorola Empowers Retailers to Mobilize Customer Loyalty Programs New Mobile Loyalty Solution answers consumer demand for mobile, flexible customer service options inside and outside of the store.

NEW YORK – NRF 2010 (Booth #1623) – The Enterprise Mobility Solutions division of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced its Mobile Loyalty Solution – the retail industry’s most comprehensive managed service that enables retailers to foster a more personal relationship with their customers and digitize store-branded membership cards on customers’ mobile phones. This new offering is compatible with the majority of mobile phones in the U.S. market today and provides customers with a more convenient shopping experience, including access to the best offers and discounts on products that interest them.

According to Juniper Research, consumer use of mobile coupons will generate close to $6 billion globally in retail redemption value by 2014.[1] With shoppers expecting more from their favorite retailers, Motorola recognizes the importance of customer loyalty and satisfaction, and its new Mobile Loyalty Solution is the first in a planned series of mobile commerce offerings to help retailers create a great shopping experience for their best customers.

“Consumer use of the mobile phone is evolving – and its importance during the shopping experience is increasing significantly. With a growing number of smart phone users and the enhanced capability of their operating platforms, an era where a constant digital connection via a mobile phone enhances the consumer’s shopping experience has begun,” said Dana Warszona, global lead for the m-commerce portfolio within Motorola’s Enterprise Mobility Solutions division. “From enabling consumers to easily search for product information to completing transactions, the mobile phone has become a business critical tool that retailers must incorporate into their strategy to meet the needs of customers, now and in the future.”

A perfect extension to a retailer’s existing loyalty program, or a viable option for retailers who wish to create a new loyalty program, Motorola’s Mobile Loyalty Solution will enable retailers to proactively send offers and incentives to the customer’s mobile phone – eliminating the need for membership cards and paper coupons. Customers can opt in to the program online or in the store by text messaging a short code to indicate interest in receiving offers on their mobile phone. Consumers then receive a mobile application with a bar code on their mobile phone that acts as the shopper’s unique identifier or mobile loyalty card and can be scanned at the point of sale (POS). By mobilizing the card, retailers are afforded the opportunity to increase program participation, and shoppers are rewarded with special offers, more convenient access to customized coupons and a quicker check-out experience.

“Kerr Drug recognizes that accessibility to product information, services and discounts is critical to maintaining customer loyalty,” said Bill Baxley, Kerr Drug’s Senior Vice President Merchandising and Marketing. "In a few weeks we will be launching Motorola's Mobile Loyalty Solution as part of a larger Kerr Reward’s program. It’s a critical piece because it will let us speak directly to shoppers with targeted digital coupons and offerings to help us foster a stronger relationship with our customers.”

Motorola’s Mobile Loyalty Solution enables a ”closed-loop” system that allows retailers to maintain a rich database of shopper product interests, purchase habits and preferences. While Motorola manages distribution to the program members, retailers can focus on creating the most relevant marketing messages, as well as determining how frequently coupons and offerings are sent. As a result, offers are timely and redemption rates are accurately tracked.

As customers enjoy the convenience of using their mobile phone to access store offers and the nearest store locations, retailers are able to attract shoppers and increase store traffic with targeted incentives. This new approach gives the retail supply chain a tool to improve sales, increase rewards redemption and improve customer satisfaction levels by eliminating the traditional approach of rewarding customers as they leave the store, which also increases the opportunity for retailers and their manufacturing trading partners to collaborate more effectively on real-time offers. Customers no longer need to carry coupons or membership cards to redeem rewards, so checkout time is significantly reduced to ultimately improve the shopping experience. And this environmentally friendly offering also eliminates the need to print coupons – creating a paper-free program, reducing costs and helping retailers drive more environmentally sustainable programs.

  • Google search gets better with highlighting of synonyms Google has recently commented on its new search engine tweak which is to show synonyms in bold with keywords. This means if you search for a word which has a synonym, it will search for results with both keywords. A synonym is something that essentially has two differnet words with similar meaning. For example movie tickets and film tickets can mean the same thing.

Most search engines did not bother with synonyms as it was a little tricky. Here I give you the example of the words Film and Movie which might mean the same. But sometimes the context of a sentence can cease to make these words synonyms. For instance if you are searching for x-ray film then the search engine searching for the keyword ‘movie’ is quite useless.

This what Google has changed to its search engine. It has got its search engine to understand the context of the words and their synonyms and then give results.

Google Search for keywords Film Tickets

You can see that the results that are highlited are both Film and Movies when movie was never entered.

Google Search for keywords X-ray Film

You can see that the results highlighted are only about keywords X-ray film. No movie keyword around at all.
Why is this a good thing?

A lot of words people use in one country might not be used as often in another. For instance in India we say ‘I am going to see a film’ but in the US ideally the sentence would be ‘I am going to see a movie’. This means someone from India is more prone to enter search results for ‘film’ rather than ‘movie’. This ability of Google search to highlight words with similar means within the context makes it easier to give us relevant results. Also for bloggers like us its good news that our websites wont have to contain the specific keywords for showing up on search engines. This probably means good news for good content and bad news for people looking to trick search engines.

If you come across more examples of synonyms showing up on Google search do let me know through your comments

Said certificate also points toward a built-in digital photo frame, although there was no mention of screen size. • Kingston announces next-gen SSDNow V+ series

Kingston is expanding its line of solid-state drives today by adding a new generation of SSDNow V+ products with TRIM support and improved performance. Available in 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, and now 512GB capacities, the new and improved series maintains the 2.5" form factor and 300MB/s Serial ATA interfaces, but pushes sequential read and write speeds to 230MB/s and 180MB/s respectively.

That's a slight 10MB/s increase over its previous generation drive ratings, but the addition of TRIM support means write performance shouldn't degrade over time as users delete files and attempt to write previously occupied blocks with new data. The MLC-based series should start at $268 for the 64GB version, $512 for the 128GB drive, a hefty $992 for the 256GB model and $1,969 for the top of the line 512GB drive.

All SSDNow V+ solid-state drives are backed by a three-year warranty. As part of Kingston's goal to provide an easy upgrade path, the company also offers the drives in a bundle that includes cloning software, a USB enclosure, 2.5"-to-3.5" adapter brackets and a set of cables.

  • Google Voice Comes on iPhone and Palm as a Web Browser App

A few weeks ago, Alex Nicolaou, Engineering Manager, wrote about the benefits of the fast and feature-rich iterative web app. Delivering Google services via mobile browsers has worked well for the Gmail team, so we decided to follow the same approach with Google Voice.

Today, we're excited to introduce the Google Voice web app for the iPhone and Palm WebOS devices. This HTML5 application provides you with a fast and versatile mobile experience for Google Voice because it uses the latest advancements in web technologies. For example, AppCache lets you interact with web apps without a network connection and local databases allow you to store data locally on the device, so you don't lose data even when you close the browser.

One of the great benefits of web applications is that you don't need to download and install an app on your phone. Instead, simply point your mobile browser to m.google.com/voice and sign in to your Google Voice account.

Then you can make calls from your phone that show your Google Voice number as the caller ID. You can also listen to voicemail and read voicemail transcripts, send and receive text messages for free, and take advantage of the low international call rates offered by Google Voice.

For quick access to the most important features like "Dialer", "Compose SMS", "Inbox" or "Contacts," you can add shortcuts to your iPhone home screen or Palm Launcher -- so cheap calls and messaging will be just a single click away. And because the Google Voice web app uses advanced features of modern HTML5 browsers, it offers native app-like performance and speed.

For more information visit m.google.com/voice or take a look at the Google Mobile Help Center. Please note, the web app is compatible with all versions of Palm WebOS and iPhone OS 3.0 and higher.

A Google Voice account is required to use the app, and Google Voice is currently only available in the United States. To learn more about Google Voice or request an invite, visit www.google.com/voice or read the Google Voice blog.

  • 50 Apple Tablets Detected Online !!!

I know. I know. No way isn’t it? How many rumors and news should we flood in the internet to make sure that it exist. Photos, videos, statements, what not? But I am pretty sure this one is the closest to being not any hoax or rumors because what we seeing here is not an artistic impression of the device but the breathing sign of the device – the data.

Recent news in Yahoo suggested that Flurry Analytics, mobile analytics company, have noticed the device’s existence through their monitoring system. Their monitoring software has detected what the company claims are evidence of 50 Apple tablets at Apple’s Cupertino campus, testing up to 200 apps that could run on the new device.

“Because Flurry could reliably “place” these devices geographically on Apple’s Cupertino campus, we have a fair level of confidence that we are observing a group of pre-release tablets in testing,” the company said in a blog post on Monday. “Testing of this device increased dramatically in January, with observed signs of life as early as October of last year. Apple appears to be going through its cycle of testing and polish, which is expected from any hardware or software company as it nears launch.”

Further, Flurry analytics ruled out the possibility that the device could be new iPhone OS besides the fact that the monitoring system was detecting iPhone OS 3.2, which has not yet been released. Currently the iPhone and iPod Touch are running on OS 3.1.2. Peter Farago, the company’s vice president of marketing puts two strong argument to rule out the iPhone :

    1. “If this were an iPhone we were looking at, the hardware would tell us when we ask it (via the software). So we can rule out that this is an iPhone.”

    2. “Also, we already see verified iPhone devices testing OS 4.0 and these leave (Apple’s Cupertino, CA) campus, whereas this device does not. This makes sense given the secrecy around the new tablet device as the launch event nears.”

Well, with the Apple event close by, shall we assume that its truly the Apple Tablet which will be launched in upcoming events or another disappointment. This time we have more arguments and compelling hints than before. Though Fargo did not clarify more on the details to avoid breaking any Terms and Conditions with the customers, he did point out that if we were to see the actual raw data, we would be pretty sure of it.

  • UPDATED: That Map? - There May Be A New Price For That

Verizon is holding a webcast tomorrow morning which, according to reports, may be to announce new pricing that 'could' result in many paying more for their wireless service.

    The question becomes:

Is Verizon concerned about maxing out their network as they continue to roll-out smartphones?

The new pricing plan that was posted earlier to BGR seems to unfairly target voice and text users using advanced devices that don't quite make it to the so-called smartphone category. If the story turns out to be the actual plan tomorrow, existing users will be grandfathered, but those who make changes and/or start new contracts could see new data fees that didn't previously apply to them.

It seems to us that those who have remained loyal to the carrier but don't choose to upgrade are being forced to unfairly subsidize those who begin to use the network to access the Internet on a frequent basis (and help pay for any needed expansion).

UPDATE: (Jan 15 9:30 AM ET) Despite headlines this morning of Verizon lowering prices, it appears that the original post to BGR is accurate. While some rates will go down (unlimited voice/text plans), smartphones and web-enabled phones will see the new data charge, all pricing is being streamlined while existing plans are being 'grandfathered'.

UPDATE 2 (Jan 15 10 AM) Verizon will be not only simplifying it pricing plans on Monday but also (confirmed) will be dropping the amount of phones offered from 80 to approx 50 according to a company spokesman. "All of these changes are intended to reduce the load on our customer service staff while continuing to provide the kind of service that people have become accustomed to from Verizon Wireless".

The Verizon Press Release has now been posted online here.

he network has the first photos of the smartphone BlackBerry Magnum. On it is rumored, including a roadmap U.S. operator AT & T. BlackBerry Magnum - a smartphone in the traditional for this series candybar with QWERTY-keyboard. However, he also has an unusual feature - a touch screen, a trackpad between the screen and keyboard, as superfluous, no. The pictures off camera, presumably, is an early prototype.

Recall the characteristics of a smartphone BlackBerry Magnum already has some data. Of course, while they are informal and the company Research In Motion (RIM) is not confirmed. Presumably, BlackBerry Magnum can work in networks GSM / EDGE and UMTS / HSDPA, supports the wireless Wi-Fi standard, and navigation GPS, and a resolution of its display is 480h360 points. In the U.S., this smartphone will be sold at the operator AT & T, on the date of issue until nothing is known.

  • HTC HD2 Extended Battery

Overview of HTC HD2 Extended Battery:

It is always good to have a big battery in a smartphone, so that you can work for longer without having to charge the phone.
However larger batteries often mean a larger overall size, which isn't for everyone

However, sometimes the need, outweighs the shape, aesthetics and weight of the product. So if this is the case for you and you own a HTC HD2, this extended battery will be ideal.

An official extended battery for the HTC HD2, the battery comes complete with a replacement back cover (it does make the machine physically thicker).

As an added bonus the cover has a kickstand that allows the device to be stood in portrait or landscape mode.
